Local MP Lembit Öpik visited Llanidloes High School on Friday 12th Feb to encourage the 6th formers to make a stand for their future and get involved in Politics.
The students had many questions to put to their local MP and participated in a vigorous debate, which centred on the recent threat of school closures, education and university funding. The 6th formers made key points about the fairness of the system and what they would change.
Lembit said "I really enjoyed the debate. It was certainly very lively. Perhaps unsurprisingly, many of the kids were interested in tuition fees. Most seemed to agree with the Lib Dem policy to get rid of them!"
He added, "Strong opinions on recent proposals to close local schools were also expressed. The vast majority of kids want all the schools and sixth forms in Powys to stay open."
Lembit is keen to be involved in the "Inter-School debating forum" which is due to begin on Tues 23rd February. Where pupils will be encouraged to discus current affairs.
