Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has welcomed the confirmation under the first ever five-year national transport plan for Wales that the Newtown bypass will be underway by 2014.

The Welsh Assembly Government 'National Transport Plan' released this week states that the Assembly Government will 'Start the programme of works, by 2014, to the A470 & A483 through Builth Wells and the A483 through Newtown (as part of the north-south corridor proposals).'

Commenting, Welsh Liberal Democrat AM Mick Bates stated:

"I am delighted that the Newtown bypass remains a priority for the Welsh Government and work will commence before 2014. This bypass has been discussed for decades and recent developments have made traffic flow in Newtown even worse, so the bypass is more crucial than ever.

"Many local residents have long campaigned for this bypass so pressure has at last paid off. The bypass will not only help improve road safety, but also help reduce congestion which will benefit our environment. It will help improve the links from North to South Wales, attracting more business and investment which will benefit our local economy.

"The recent consultation outlined a number of options for the proposed route. It is important that local residents continue to be fully engaged in the planning process for the transport improvements that are proposed and I hope that we will see work underway as soon as possible."
